Prostate Diseases

young doctor with senior patient

There are a number of diseases associated with the prostate gland that range from causing only minor discomfort to full cancer, and with treatments ranging from taking anti-biotics to surgical proceedures.

The Prostate Gland

The prostate gland is a small gland about the size of a large walnut weighing about 20g found only in men.

Diseases

The closeness of the prostate gland to the urinary tract means that any problems with the prostate can have side effects on the bladder and the urethra. There are three main problems associated with the prostate gland; these problems are known as lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). These problems tend to occur at different stages in a mans life.

  • Prostatitis is an infection of the gland that affects about 30% of men in the age range 20-40
  • Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland occurs slowly usually after the age of 45 years.
  • Prostate Cancer common in men over 55 years old, although it is possible for it to occur earlier.

It is very important that advice / treatment is sought as soon as possible as other more serious problems may occur as a result of non-treatment.
